"My father will sit down and give you theories to explain why he does this or that," the son of the billionaire investor George Soros has said. "But I remember seeing it as a kid and thinking, at least half of this is bull. I mean, I know the reason he changes his position on the market or whatever is because his back starts killing him. He literally goes into a spasm, and it's this early warning sign."

Clearly this is part of the reason why George Soros is so good at what he does: he is someone who is aware of the value of the products of his unconscious reasoning. But if you or I were to invest our money with Soros, we'd feel nervous if the only reason he could give for a decision was that his back hurt.

실로 흥미진진한 소재로 미국에서 큰 반향을 일으켰던 이 책은, 제목처럼 '눈 깜짝 할 사이' 인간이 무언가를 인식하였다 깨닫기도 전에 이미 무의식적으로 사물에 대한 가치 판단이 이루어진다라는 명제를 두고 치밀하고도 과학적으로 해부하고 있다. 더불어 노력에 따라 'The Power of Thinking Without Thinking' 이라는 무의식적 자가 판단의 개발 향상법이 존재함을 밝힌다.

프로 도박사들의 'gut feeling' 이라던가, 운동선수들의 본능적인 직감, 혹은 설명할 수 없는 여자들의 육감, 나쁜일을 예감하는 무언지 모르는 찝찝한 기분 등을 단순히 비과학적이라 외면하는 것이 큰 오류일 수 있다는 가능성을 열어 둔다. 프로이드가 무의식의 해석을 기본적으로 '금기된 성'에 두었다면, 이 책은 그보다 좀 더 넓은 패러다임을 제시하며 사회적인 통념에 정면으로 반박한다.

어른들이 얘기하는 '어젯밤 꿈자리가 사나웠다'를 더이상 단순히 미신이라 가벼이 간과해서만은 안될 일이다.
